We respectfully recognize that we live on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Lūnaapéewak, and Chonnonton peoples, at the forks of Deshkan Ziibi (Antler River), an area subject to the Dish with One Spoon Wampum and other treaties, colonized as London, Ontario. We strive to foster and maintain respectful, supportive relations with three nearby contemporary First Nations: Oneida of the Thames First Nation, Chippewa of the Thames First Nation and Munsee-Delaware First Nation, as well as with the growing urban population of Indigenous peoples from these and other Nations.
We are a non-partisan citizens' advocacy group whose focus is on water, peace and social justice issues and a robust universal taxpayer-funded healthcare system. We advocate municipally for improved services and climate action over tax cuts. As committed environmental activists, we successfully campaigned for water rights and for London to become a Blue Community. We are members of the London Environmental Network (LEN) and our work intersects with such groups as the Ontario Health Coalition, Climate Action London, People for Peace London (P4PL), and the London and District Labour Council. We recognize that through our collective and intersectional work, we move steadily towards a more equitable and just community and planet.
About the Work
The Blue Community Project, spearheaded by the Council of Canadians, encourages municipalities and a variety of communities to adopt a "water commons" framework, treating water as a shared resource and a human right. The City of London, Ontario has embraced this framework by passing resolutions to recognize water and sanitation as human rights, to promote public ownership of water services, and phase out bottled water in municipal facilities. Becoming a Blue Community signifies a commitment to water stewardship and social justice, promoting the idea that access to clean water is a fundamental right for all, not a commodity.
Alongside People for Peace London, the London Chapter of the Council of Canadians has long advocated for peace, human rights and justice for Palestine, issues that are often a focal point in the chapter's social justice work.
As members of the London Environmental Network, the London Council of Canadians Chapter works with LEN to help protect our environment and build a more sustainable city by offering environmental programs and climate action opportunities for all residents. Each year, we and Blue Community London have tables at EarthFest. We hope to see you there!
Successive provincial governments have failed to protect and improve our public health care system. It is at this moment being dismantled and sold off to private for-profit interests that will demonstrably fail to deliver cost-effective high quality healthcare. Like the Ontario Health Coalition, we are a non-partisan public interest activist organization who work to strengthen the five pillars of the Canada Health Act: universality, comprehensiveness, portability, accessibility and public administration. We work with the OHC to protect our public health system from threats such as cuts, delisting and privatization, because healthcare is a human right, and as such must be part of a robust, well-funded and universally accessible system.
